Gas leaks in or around your home can be dangerous. An artificial odour has been added to both natural and LPG gas. So you should be able to smell this if there is a gas leak. Did you know that it’s possible (and very EASY!) to locate gas leak by using household items?

If you think you have a gas leak, you need to turn off all your gas appliances. Then turn off your gas main or bottles. Make sure you air the room to dispel the gas.

The good news is, in this video, we’ll show you how to do this step by step.

If you can smell gas on your property

The first thing you should do is to put out your cigarette. Then watch this video.

If you can smell gas in your kitchen or near a gas appliances, make sure you know where to isolate the gas.

For natural gas, the isolation valve will be in the gas meter box on the LHS.

But if you’re using bottled gas, just turn both taps off on the top of the bottles.

Do you know by law you must find and fix the gas leak before you can complete any new gas work on your property?

And you can easily locate the leak on your own!

That’s not all. You don’t have to purchase anything expensive. You can use things that you have lying around the house.

All you need is:

  • A glass of water
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • A paint brush

Then follow these THREE EASY STEPS:

  1. Place a small amount of detergent into the glass of water and mix it together
  2. Wet the paint brush and coat all the visible joints with the soapy water mix
  3. If there is a fitting or joint that is leaking, the escaping gas will start to blow bubbles

If you find the leak, make sure to shut the gas main off inside your meter box if you are on natural gas.

Or by turning the gas valve off on the top of your LPG bottles, and then call a local gas fitter to come and sort it out for you.

Sometimes the leaking fitting or pipe may be inside an appliance or under the ground somewhere.

Now this becomes a bit harder to find so you will need some specialised equipment to locate the leak.
